“They forced us into a space and made us hate our own race, by erecting apartheid structures to direct our ways, now mirrors are being broken in Council Flats because we can’t stand to see the reflection of our own face.” – Earl Mentor
The immense irony of “The Flower Pot” built dead-center in our council flats is a direct contradiction between “growing flowers” to showcase the beauty and the “broken glasses” scattered about in this square showcasing ugliness. Would a flower survive under these conditions – when one observes that most of my people have given up on their personal growth and development, especially in our council flats? Metaphorically speaking, a rose can grow through concrete, but if we have broken glass that can cut off the stem of this rose, this rose has no chance of surviving this growth process. This is how I compare life in our ghettos.
The potential for positive growth amongst our people is directly proportional to the harmful mental low standards we set for our lives due to our negative conditioning, and therefore, would “cut the stem” of those who try to surpass us in life. What a sad state of affairs when one observes the everyday conflict amongst our people when success or the ability to advance in life is the subject of heated discussions amongst the same people who smile in your face and then pull a knife when your back is turned. The negative labels we project on the next person every time a resident tries and make it in life, you would find their own praying for their downfall.
